Glass or Graphics?

Natalie has been a full time artist since 1994. Although she majored in Graphic Design, she never gave up her love for glass art, pursuing this with a determined passion. She does not like to brag about her career, but will mention that yes, one time she juried for a special QVC shopping channel event, and yes, her product was chosen out of 800 items! She produced 1,000 pieces in three weeks and appeared on a live broadcast with the other 19 chosen participants. Her works have been seen in major galleries and special invitational shows. She did the art show circuit for many years, truly loving the people who attended and the friendship/bond with fellow artists. In regards to her graphic skills, she graduated in 1990 (prior to Desktop Publishing) She later taught herself how to use Adobe programs such as Photoshop, Freehand, Dreamweaver, InDesign, and others.

She will readily admit that being a full time artist has its ups and downs, especially financially. By 2001 she had built a successful wholesale business of her unique glass art items, but after 9/11 these accounts came to a standstill. She lives simply, and has used recycled materials to build her retail studio and to modify the carport she works in. By working from home, she was able to be a full-time mother of her two children, as well provide apprenticeships to High School students.

Her lifestyle has also allowed to work with animals. Her special interest is with birds, wild and domestic. Many birds have found sanctuary at her island home. She has always felt that it is better to give, even when you "feel" you have nothing to share. She is incredibly determined, and fiercely motivated to continue her career in the arts.

"Encourage our youth, be an apprentice or mentor"

"Now, more than ever we need each other to get through these times, we need to lend a hand, a smile and encourage"

About the artist...

Natalie, founder of Red Tail Glass Works, has been working in glass for
over twenty years. Her interest in glass began at age 12, when she
apprenticed herself informally to a glass artist near her childhood
home in Indiana. She collected scraps from his work ("he had a sandbox
full of glass shards - how could I resist?") and began creating on her
own. Her family moved to Charlevoix, Michigan, a small town located
"up north" on Lake Michigan. This beautiful location definitely fueled
inspiration and love for nature she carries.

She likes to credit her high school art teacher, Mercedes Mathers who
was always supportive and had that touch to make an impossible project
become reality. Natalie then went on to complete a formal education
at the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. Since
then, she has devoted her life to glass arts. Hahn has created a line of
functional pieces which allow her to work on a small, precise scale,
creating miniature abstract glass works which can be worn. Natalie
also does large commission works as well as architectural pieces. Over
the last few years she has been experimenting with sculptural works,
using fused glass, stainless steel, and recycled components.
This has resulted in a fun line of kinetic, wind driven art.

Her work is currently on display at many regional and national
galleries and shops. Locally her works can be viewed at Music For The
Eyes in Langley, and many other shops, galleries, including her home
retail studio "The Glass Shack". Many of her pieces have
been displayed in Michigan, Florida, Arizona, Georgia and
California, across the country.
No two pieces are ever alike, she is always striving to push the
glass medium a little further both in functionality and design.

Of her work, Natalie remarks, "Working with glass comes from a primal
source for me. I love the way that glass allows me to express myself.
It's a hands-on experience created from a palette of light resulting
from frozen liquid (glass). Also, I will admit I have more fun
cooking glass in the kiln than with food in the kitchen." The
artist lives on an island north of Seattle, south of Vancouver, BC.
She is the mother to the most amazing children, Dakota and Christopher.
Her "other" children include two dobermans, and five birds.

She thanks her family, especially her children, for many times they needed their mom to drive them somewhere only to be held late by a slow firing kiln. In addition, friends and community for their generous and gracious support,

Her sister is a fine artist working with oils in large landsacape paintings, lives in northern Michigan with her husband, and their most amazing son.

Her brother is a top notch chef, and recently started his own company in northern Michigan.

Her mother is very creative and comes from Germany.

She also holds deep gratitude for support that her "love of her life" has given, being apart for almost 24 years, she's incredibly happy to have this.
